Isaiah is 8 Months Old

Last time I logged in it had been so long that I forgot my password and had to change it.  And that just happened AGAIN!  Screw google for not letting you use the same password you've used in the past!  I'm never going to remember the one I just chose!

Anyway, Isaiah is 8 months old today... yay for being on time with a post!

So, at 8 months old...

-Isaiah weighs 19.5 lbs.

-He is about 28.5-29 inches long... it was hard to measure him; he didnt want to stay still.

-His head circumference is 18.25 inches.

-Still no teeth... I never would have guessed he would still have no teeth at 8 months since he started teething at 4 weeks old.

-Still exclusively breastfed with no bottles and no solids.  He did have a tiny taste of a pear I was eating the other day, but he just licked it, didn't actually ingest anything.

-Like last month, he's still in the awkward place between 2 and 3 naps, but moving closer to 2.

-He is now cross-crawling on his hands and knees!  I just love crawling babies, they are so darn cute.

-He is pulling up to stand.

-He moves from laying down to sitting up (and vice versa) with ease.

-He is starting to become more adventurous in travelling around the house, so we now close the gate at the top of the stairs.  We also recently put our mattresses on the ground because he is too mobile.

-We cosleep, and honestly sleep is not wonderful for him lately, but still within the range of what is biologically normal. The past few weeks have been really yucky for sleep.  One night he woke up 6 times.  He is waking up a minimum of 3 times a night, and almost always wakes up within the first hour of going to bed.  I expect this now so it doesn't bother me like it did when Noah did it. I just go in, nurse him, and he goes easily back to sleep.

-He's doing pretty well in the car.

-We still babywearing all the time. I'm still a carrier-churning maniac, and right now I have 32.

I have been awful about taking pictures in the past few weeks, but here are a few of the recent ones!

Right after a haircut... I didn't realize 1/8 inch was so freaking short!:

Isaiah is 6 Months Old

9 days late... oops.

-Isaiah is about 18.5 lbs.

-He is 28 inches.

-His head circumference is about __ inches (it was 17 inches at 5 months)

-Same as last month, he is on the medium rise setting on his diapers. We exclusively use Flip covers with various inserts (stay dry, organic cotton, Thirsties inserts, flats, or prefolds) during the day, with a few bumGenius Freetimes thrown in, mostly for Daddy. At night he wears an sbish snapless fitted (with both doublers) with a Blueberry one size cover with aplix. The rise on the cover is completely unsnapped to fit over the fitted.

-He still has those two bottom teeth playing peekaboo (since he was 4 weeks old), and his bottom gums are swelling out in other areas, so I think some of his other teeth are moving around. I cannot believe those teeth haven't come through!

-He has no bottles ever, nor will he ever.

-He has had no solids, and we don't plan to introduce them anytime soon.

-We cosleep, and I can't imagine how much life would suck if we didn't.  He sleeps like an infant is supposed to - getting up to nurse anywhere from 1 to 3 times in the night.  1 time a night has been rare this past month, it's usually twice.  But almost every night this past month he has had a long awake period in the middle of the night, ranging anywhere from half an hour to an hour and a half (this is why life would suck if we didn't cosleep).

-He goes to bed between 7 and 8, depending on when he woke up from his final nap, and wakes up between 6:30 and 7:30 (we are very very lucky if he sleeps all the way until 7:30, though).

-Isaiah isn't sleeping very well on me anymore, so most of his naps are in bed.  Like last month, most of his naps are 30-45 minutes long, but a few times a week we get one that ranges from an hour to an hour and 45 minutes long.  I big-puffy-heart LOVE those ones.

-We're in that awkward place between 2 and 3 naps.  He needs 3 but we can only fit in 2 most days.

-He still sleeps on his tummy, but this month he started flipping to his back on his own while he's in bed (he has been rolling over for a long time, obviously, but just never did it in bed until recently) and so occasionally he sleeps on his back.  He's finally at the point where I can lay him down on his back and his windmilling arms wouldn't wake him up immediately.  I don't usually do this, though, because he sleeps shorter periods when he's on his back.

-In the past I have said that Isaiah is the happiest baby I have ever met... Well, the past 2 or 3 weeks he's been kind of miserable.  He still has big smiles and giggles, but he's a lot fussier again this month.  It's been reminding me of when he was a newborn and things sucked.  Obviously it's not THAT bad, but we have seen far far better days.

-He started pushing himself up on his hands and knees and rocking right when he turned 5 months old.  Still not cross-crawling, though.

-He scoots himself all over the house, but hasn't perfected the army crawl like Noah had at this age.

-He is a really good sitter.  His back is straight, he doesn't need to be propped up by anything, and he can stay like that for a good 10 minutes.  Right when I started thinking he might not be sitting "properly" by the time he turned 6 months, he started sitting really well!  Just a few days before he turned 6 months old.

-He is friendly to people and smiles at them when they talk to and smile at him.

-He loves Noah!

-He is getting better in the car.  He won't nap in there (booo!  My sympathies to those of you whose children don't nap in the car!  I never understood how this was possible before), but at least he doesn't scream the entire time we're in there.  If I provide him with a steady rotation of toys he can make it through a 20 minute car ride with no issues... once a day, anyway.  The car ride back home usually involves screaming.

-He still has all his baths in the kitchen sink because it's easier for me.  I have no idea when I'm going to switch this to the bath tub.  Now that he sits up straight he is fitting really well in the sink and I have even less motivation to change the location.  Oh well!

-While last month I had 25 baby carriers, now I have 35 (even though I continue to sell them off).  Hello, my name is Lauren, and I am a babywearing addict.

This was a very cranky day... and he has since decided he doesn't like the soother (which I didn't even give to him until he turned 5 months old... I was shocked he took it in the first place!):

I forgot to mention... instead of reclining in the bouncy chair, he now insists on sitting straight up.  He can even do a sit up to get in this position if I lay him in the chair.

Isaiah is 5 Months Old!

This is 5 days late... does it count that I've been thinking about it since before he turned 5 months?

-Isaiah is a little over 17 lbs (Weighed naked on our digital scale he was 17.2 lbs on his 5 month birthday).

-He is 27.25 inches tall and in 9 month clothing.  He's grown almost 2 inches in the past month and can't squeeze into 6 month at all anymore.

-His head circumference is about 17 inches.

-Same as last month, he is on the medium rise setting on his diapers. Even though we have hundreds of diapers (I'm slowly selling off the pocket diapers that there is no chance of me using anymore), we exclusively use Flip covers with various inserts (stay dry, organic cotton, Thirsties inserts, flats, or prefolds) during the day, with a few bumGenius Freetimes thrown in, mostly for Daddy. At night he wears an sbish snapless fitted (with both doublers) with a Blueberry one size cover with aplix. The rise on the cover is completely unsnapped to fit over the fitted.

-He still has those two bottom teeth playing peekaboo, and his bottom gums are swelling out in other areas, so I think some of his other teeth are moving around.  The poor baby's stubborn teeth just won't poke all the way through!

-He has no bottles ever, nor will he ever have one unless something horrible happens, like me ending up in the hospital on my deathbed unable to breastfeed.

-We've been cosleeping for over a month, and we love it.  He sleeps like an infant is supposed to - getting up to nurse anywhere from 1 to 3 times in the night.  He can fall asleep if I put him down when he's awake, as long as he's calm and relaxed.  I lie there with him, though.

-Overall he sleeps about 11.5-12 hours at night, and goes to bed between 7 and 8, depending on when he woke up from his final nap - right now it's usually closer to 7.

-Isaiah doesn't nap in a crib anymore, just on me while I wear him (which is what we're doing right now).  His naps are usually 30-40 minutes, but occasionally we get one around an hour long.

-He is down to 3 naps a day, which isn't a lot of napping time considering his naps are usually only 30-40 minutes long, but it seems to be all he needs.  Apparently I breed children who need freakishly short naps.

-He still sleeps on his tummy, which I am less nervous about now that we cosleep.

-Isaiah is THE happiest baby I have ever met.  His constant enormous smile makes us all smile constantly, too.  I love his shrieks and giggles and how he "talks" to us.  He has such an awesome personality.

-He's getting very good at grabbing things and putting them in his mouth.

-He rolled over for the first time at 15 months (front to back), and didn't do it again until 19 weeks when he started going both ways.  Then he didn't really do it much until the week before he turned 5 months.  Now he's just like Noah was at the same age - if you lay him down on his back he will immediately roll onto his front.

-He is friendly to people and smiles at them when they talk to and smile at him, but he's very selective about who he wants to hold him.  He is obviously awesome with me, good with Justin, good with my mom or sister, but kind of awful with my inlaws.  He likes them from afar, but if they even start talking about holding him he gets a scared look on his face and will start crying.  So weird.

-He really likes his Dad, I think maybe more than Noah did when he was this age, but my memory might be skewed because once Noah was about 6 or 7 months (and for a long time after that) he had a HUGE preference for me, and it sometimes seemed like he didn't even like his Dad (which was sad and  ridiculous because Justin is the world's greatest Dad!)

-He can sit independently for up to 15 seconds if he's interested in balancing himself properly.  He is nowhere near mastering this, but I have no doubt that by 6 months he'll be sitting independently.

-He loves Noah!

-We still babywear all the time, which makes us all very happy, and our carrier stash continues to grow. I've sold a ton of carriers, but I'm pretty sure I have about 25 right now.  I honestly lost track, and I need to do inventory.

-Evenings are no longer witching hours for Isaiah.  He's pretty happy, the only difference is that if he is tired, he NEEDS to be with me.  If Justin is carrying him around while I get stuff ready for bed he will start to WAIL, and then stop as soon as I take him.  We can hold this off for a bit if Justin follows me around while I get stuff ready, but he HAS to see me. It's only when he's feeling tired, but as soon as I take him he can often be perfectly happy for another half hour before starting bedtime routine.  We find it rather amusing.

-He still has all his baths in the kitchen sink because it's easier for me.

Isaiah is 4 Months Old!

My blogging has gone to poop, but gosh darnit I'm going to try my hardest to post this on Isaiah's ACTUAL 4 month birthday (January 22)!

-Isaiah weighs 16.5 lbs (this was naked, on our digital scale, on his 4 month birthday).

-He is 25.5 inches tall and mostly in 6 month clothing (Carter's brand... in some other brands he's in 9 month or 6-12 month).

-Same as last month, he is on the medium rise setting on his diapers. Even though we have hundreds of diapers, we exclusively use Flip covers with various inserts (stay dry, organic cotton, Thirsties inserts, flats, or prefolds) during the day, with a few bumGenius Freetimes thrown in.  At night he wears an sbish snapless fitted (with both doublers) with a Blueberry one size cover with aplix. The rise on the cover is completely unsnapped to fit over the fitted.

-He still has those two bottom teeth playing peekaboo.

-He has no bottles ever, nor will he ever have one unless something horrible happens, like me ending up in the hospital on my deathbed unable to breastfeed.

-Last month I was rejoicing over how he was a super sleeper at night time, with a record of 11 hours and 15 minutes straight, and almost always getting a 6-9 hour stretch out of him at the beginning of the night.  He was only getting up to nurse once a night, twice a night if you counted when I was already awake in the morning. Well, no longer.  He usually sleeps 12.5 - 13 hours each night but, but he is up 3 or 4 times a night to nurse.  One of those is usually around 7am after I am already awake.  We recently played musical beds, so the king bed is back in the master bedroom, and Noah's old crib is side-car'd between it and the wall.  Last night Isaiah spent half the night in there, half the night in his crib in his room.  I'm not exactly sure where I'll be going with this.  There are reasons I want to cosleep and reasons I'm not sure I want to start it up again now, after 4 months of not cosleeping.  I will say, though, that I completely expected this regression to happen, so I'm not feeling all distressed like I did when Noah did this.

-Isaiah only ever naps 30-40 minutes at a time, whether he's in his crib or we're babywearing.

-He is still pretty decent at going to sleep on his own if I put him in his crib on his tummy. Not every time, but I don't expect him to.

-He still does all his sleeping on his tummy. I'm becoming slightly less nervous about this, but I do still carefully examine him over the video monitor to see him breathing several times a night (haha, no really).

-He continues to be a super happy baby, like he was at 3 months.  

-He's shrieking with delight, giggling, and still has the HUGEST smiles! 

-He brings his hands together all the time, eats his fingers, and is starting to grab things.

-He rolled over for the first time when he was 15 weeks old... hasn't really done it since, though!

-He is friendly to people and smiles at them when they talk to and smile at him, but he doesn't want anyone but me to hold him.  He could be perfectly happy laying on the floor, smiling and cooing away, but if someone besides me (or sometimes Daddy) picks him up, within a few minutes he will start crying.

-He likes to sit up and look around (propped up by us, although he has balanced in a sitting position for a good 5 seconds on several occasions).

-He loves to watch Noah play, and really enjoys when Noah rolls around with him.  He gets a giant smile!

-We still babywear all the time, which makes us all happy, and our carrier stash continues to grow.  I believe we're at 18 right now.  4 Wrap Conversion Mei Tais, 7 woven wraps, 2 stretchy wraps, a ring sling, a pouch sling, and 3 buckle carriers. This is a much more expensive addiction than cloth diapers!

-Evenings aren't really that fussy any more.  I can eat a lot of my dinners sitting down because he's usually sleeping in the carrier, or he recently woke up from a nap and is happy to sit in the bouncy chair on the table and watch us eat.  He gets bored of that after 5-10 minutes, usually, and then he's happy to sit in my lap and watch Daddy and Noah eat.

-He still has all his baths in the kitchen sink because it's easier for me.

Isaiah is 3 Months Old

Hi people!  I haven't been blogging or even reading any blogs because my laptop busted and Noah has been sick with the darn plague for the past week, but I had to make some time to write a 3 month post before 2013 gets here!

Isaiah was 3 months old on December 22.  (Incidentally, I need to have my kids earlier in the month so that I have more time to get the appropriate post up in the actual month that it occurred.)  Here's the quick low down:

-Isaiah weighs 15.5 lbs (this was naked, on our digital scale, on his 3 month birthday).

-I believe he's around 25 inches but I'm not sure  I can't remember when I last measured him.  He's in 6 month clothing, some of which is too small because of his cloth diapers.  If we used disposables they would all fit fine (although a few things are getting too short).  He's tall, but not as tall as Noah was at this age.  However, he does weigh more than Noah did.


-He is on the medium rise setting on his diapers.  Even though we have hundreds of diapers, we exclusively use Flip covers with various inserts (stay dry, organic cotton, Thirsties inserts, flats, or prefolds) during the day, with a few bumGenius Freetimes thrown in.  This means I never have to stuff diapers, which I HATE HATE HATE doing.  I may as well get rid of all my pocket diapers.  At night he wears an sbish snapless fitted (with both doublers) with a Blueberry one size cover with aplix.  The rise on the cover is completely unsnapped to fit over the fitted.

-He still has those two bottom teeth playing peekaboo.

-He has no bottles ever, nor will he ever have one unless something horrible happens, like me ending up in the hospital on my deathbed unable to breastfeed.


-He is a super sleeper at night time!  His record is 11 hours and 15 minutes straight.  He's also done 10 hours and 45 minutes.  Those were his two longest stretches.  Generally I get a 6-9 hour stretch out of him at the beginning of the night, which is amazing.  He's only getting up to nurse once most nights, which is wonderful to me.  Noah was up nursing once a night until he was 18 months old, so I'm happy with this and I won't be looking to night wean Isaiah until he's a toddler, probably.  I do expect some regressions in this area, though.

-Right before he turned 3 months I started putting him down for some naps in his crib because he doesn't nap on me as well as he used to.  If he's sleeping on me and I have to talk, he wakes up.  However, he also only cat naps in his crib.  Or rather, he did only cat nap in his crib.  In the past few days I've gotten a couple of long naps out of him (over an hour).  The napping situation is very fluid.  Noah was a terrible napper and I vowed not to stress myself out over the napping thing.  I'm just happy that Isaiah finally nurses to sleep (he didn't do that until sometime in the past few weeks).

-Isaiah is still pretty decent at going to sleep on his own if I put him in his crib on his tummy.  Not every time, but I don't expect him to.

-He still does all his sleeping on his tummy.  I'm becoming slightly less nervous about this, but I do still carefully examine him over the video monitor to see him breathing several times a night (haha, no really).

-He is a super happy baby most of the time now.  He's very very smiley, starting to laugh, and is still very "talkative".  I just love when he talks, it's the cutest thing.

-He is quick to smile back at people when they're talking and smiling at him, but he definitely prefers him Mommy over everyone else.  Other people always want to hold him, but it never lasts long as he makes his preference for me very clear pretty quickly.

-He's not rolling yet, but he can push himself right up off his tummy when he's laying on his front.

-He likes to sit up and look around (propped up by us, although he has balanced in a sitting position for a good 5 seconds on several occasions).

-He loves to watch Noah, and that makes my heart melt.

-We still babywear a lot, which we both love.

-Evenings aren't nearly as fussy as they used to be, and I can eat dinner sitting down more often now, either with Isaiah in the bouncy chair or sitting on my lap (he prefers to be on my lap, obviously).

-He still has all his baths in the kitchen sink because it's easier for me, but he has totally outgrown it.  It's very squishy in there.

I'm trying to think of other things, but I'm feeling very rushed to get this posted before Isaiah wakes up.  So here are some cute pictures from the past few weeks!

Isaiah is One Month Old!

Isaiah was 1 month on October 22.  I wanted to write an extended post like I did with Noah, but with 2 kids, one of whom doesn't nap, and the fact that I have to go to bed as soon as Isaiah goes to bed, I really don't have time for an extended post.  Here's an update on my littlest man:

-He got weighed at the midwife's on October 22, his one month birthday, and he was 10lbs 9oz (naked).  He gained 3.5lbs in 3 weeks.  Hopefully he'll slow down a bit this coming month!  It's crazy to me that some people give birth to babies that are his current size.

-He is now 22 inches long (he grew 2 inches).

-His head circumference is close to 15 inches now.

-Isaiah is exclusively breastfed, of course.  Just from the right side so far, (Noah has the left side, because the letdown on the side is crazy).  No bottles, and I don't expect him to ever have one.

-He's still super grunty, groany, moany, and shrieky, but I may be seeing slight improvements in that area.

-To attack the gruntyness (I know that's not a word), Isaiah is seeing the chiropractor, now on a weekly basis instead of every few days, and I bombard him with homeopathic colic remedies.  He doesn't have actual "colic" (crying 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, for at least 3 weeks), but his gruntyness stems from gas and all those remedies are geared toward gas.  I think I see some improvements when I give them to him.

-He takes the "witching hour" very seriously.  Well, witching "hours".  From about 4pm (or whenever he wakes up from his last nap) until he goes to bed sometime after 8.  He won't go down for another nap after that, although he does have short 10 minute snoozes in our arms.  Thankfully he is quite content if he is being held and walked around, so we don't have to listen to screaming as long as we're doing that.  We're doing quick and easy suppers and either take turns eating or I wear Isaiah in the Ergo and eat my dinner off of the kitchen island while bouncing around between bites.  This is a tiring phase, but thankfully we know from experience that "this too shall pass," and that makes it a lot easier to deal with.

-I do a LOT of babywearing with Isaiah - more than with Noah.  This is out of necessity, seeing as I have a toddler to take care of as well.  But Isaiah loves it.  I find he is more content on the days that I wear him a lot, not just when he's being worn but also when he's not being worn.  He's more chill.

-He is hit and miss for naps.  He'll have a couple of good ones if I hold him for long enough after he falls asleep.  He will NOT go to sleep on his own anymore.  That was done back at 2 weeks old.  I do allow him to fuss to see if he'll fall asleep on his own, but the fussing always turns to crying and I am not going to let a newborn cry it out.

-Things change on a bi-weekly basis, but lately during the day Isaiah takes most of his naps on his tummy in the bassinet of the pack and play in our living room.  He used to take them swaddled in his crib, but that stopped working out so well.

-Night time is frustrating.  It's hard to get him down for the night.  He either doesn't fall asleep for hours, or he does fall asleep but wakes up within 5-20 minutes of us putting him down.  And he doesn't just fuss, he CRIES.  Last night we had to put him back to sleep about 10 times.

-Once he's "down for the night" he generally sleeps for 2 to 2.5 hours, sometimes reaching 3 hours, but never longer than that.  Last night he had two "stretches" of sleep that were only 1.5 hours.  Boo.  He normally sleeps for at least 2 hours though, so I'm hoping those super short stretches were just flukes.  I am waking up to nurse him either 3 or 4 times each night.  3 times doesn't bother me.  4 kind of does.

-(Sometimes I wonder if God gives me crappy nights like last night just to make me appreciate the other nights more, since it's fairly easy to wish your child would sleep longer than 2 or 3 hours at a time.  However, 2-3 hours feels pretty good compared to 1.5 hours!)

-He's had 2 haircuts already.  His hair is quite light, like a light light brown or dark dark blonde.

-His blue eyes are lightening, so I'm pretty sure they'll stay blue.

-His skin tone is darker than Noah's was at this age, so he might have his Daddy's dark Italian skin.

-He loves when I wrap him in a towel and hold his head over the sink to wash his face and hair.  He closes his eyes and looks so content.

-He gets all his baths in the kitchen sink.  Whether he enjoys it or not depends on the day.

-I wash his face and hair everyday, but actual baths only happen a couple of times a week.

-Isaiah started smiling on his one month birthday.  We only get a few smiles per day at this point, but we'll take them:)

-He is mostly wearing one-size diapers now, on the smallest settings.  He doesn't wear the Kissaluvs fitteds anymore because he pees right through them.  Anything from the bumGenius family (4.0, Elemental, Freetime, and Flip) fit him nicely back at 8lbs.  Thankfully I have a big stash of these, because none of the Kawaii pockets fit him, even the Pure and Naturals, which are supposed to fit from 6-22lbs.  They're way too big around the waist.

-Isaiah absolutely hated diaper changes for the first couple of weeks and would scream the whole time.  He's chilled out in this area now, thankfully!

-He has a very strong trunk and neck, and holds his head up very well.  He's also pushing off things with his legs now.

-Both of Isaiah's testicles were undescended when he was born, which stressed Justin and I out majorly (the cause of Justin's infertility is an undescended testicle that wasn't corrected until he was 5).  However, they both descended by the time he was 2 weeks old.  HUGE RELIEF!  It must have just been because he was 18 days early.


I just realized I've been really bad at taking pictures lately.  I think it's because Isaiah is at the stage where if you put him down he is not happy.  That doesn't give a lot of opportunity to take pictures!  These are the ones taken within the past few days:

Okay, that wasn't as bad - by bad I mean short - as I thought it would be.  Now I'm off to feed myself and Noah before Isaiah wakes up, which could be any minute now.

Diaper Stash Update

I have mentioned my enormous cloth diaper stash a few times on this blog.  I recently bought more.  I am really excited about my new purchases, and can't wait for the little Bambino to be here so he can wear them!

I am also selling the 10 pocket diapers that I mentioned I hated and never used.  Believe it or not, even though I hated them and never used them I had to make myself sell 5 of them.  And unfortunately, the selling of those 10 diapers did not begin to cover what I spent on new diapers.  However, I did get my money back.  I bought those particular diapers in a package deal that worked out to be just a little over $5 a diaper.  I just sold 5 Bamboo Minky diapers for $7 a diaper (the cheapest price they sell for if you're not buying a huge package is $11 each, and they were only used once or twice).  The other 5 diapers are being sold for $5 each.

I actually couldn't believe how quickly the diapers sold.  In my area we have a lot of Facebook groups specifically for moms.  I was told that well priced diapers go fast on those sites, but I didn't realize how fast!  Within 20 minutes of posting the diapers, 9 of the 10 were sold.  Within an hour I had cash in hand for 5 of them.  The other 4 should be paid for and picked up sometime next week.  Sweet, eh?

Moving along... I thought I should take some pictures to document the enormity of my stash.  I didn't do anything special for these pictures, I just literally took the pictures of the diapers in the state they're currently in.

Top shelf: Far left is most of our one size or larger fitteds.  Behind the wipes warmer is the bin of pocket diapers that I actually liked using (there were only 10 of them).  Behind the cloth wipes are some empty Fuzzibunz pocket shells, and 3 of our 5 Goodnight Heavy Wetters (which I don't recommend overnight for actual heavy wetters).  On the far right in the front are some of our one sized or larger sized covers.  Behind the covers is a stack of premium perfect fit prefolds and some flushable liners.

Bottom Shelf: On the far left is a basket that holds about 1/3 of our stash of hemp inserts, doublers, and prefolds.  Behind that, in the bin that you can hardly see, is some more pocket diapers with a few fitteds lying on top.  To the right of the basket are some bumGenius stay dry doublers.  To the right of the doublers is a stack of 12 Flip Stay Dry inserts.  The two stacks on the far right are birdseye cotton flats.  Not all of them, though, because we actually have 20.

This is a close up of the pocket diapers I actually liked using on Noah.  They are all one size Kawaiis, all snaps, all microfleece inner, and all had fantastic fit:

 This is a close up of the pocket diapers that I didn't hate, but I didn't really like using.  Half of them are snaps, half are aplix.  All of them are suede cloth inner, and I found this particular suede cloth left little fuzzies on Noah's skin.  That was really annoying, so I never used these once I expanded my stash.  Justin sometimes did, though:

This is the new baby's change table... it's not as spacious as our other change table, so I'm not a huge fan of it.  It'll do for now.

Obviously I need to fold these diapers... and find a place for them somewhere.  Some of them have bins available on the baby's change table, because they're specifically newborn diapers.  The rest of them?  Let's just say, it should be interesting.

These are brand new one size aplix pocket diapers with microfleece inner... They were a good deal, and I bought them for when someone besides Justin or I are changing diapers (which will rarely happen, frankly), and for when diaper changes are especially difficult due to a squirmy baby:

Tuesday Tidbits

-I'm glad most of you found humor in my last post.  While I do get totally irritable when I'm very pregnant and sleep deprived, that post was not meant to be taken too seriously.  Although I meant everything I said in it.  Seriously, people, HASHTAGS DON'T WORK ON FACEBOOK!

-I am specifically writing this post because people have expressed concern over whether I'm okay, since it's been almost a week.  This is sweet... and funny.  I guess if you write a big rant and then don't have anything else to say for 6 days, people might get concerned.

-This morning I was so incredibly productive simply because I actually wrote down a To Do list.  I rarely do that, I usually just keep things in my head.  But man, I should really write things down more often.  My living room looks fantastic!  The hardwood floors are gleaming, I actually moved furniture away from the walls to wash underneath the couches, and I rearranged the layout!  I'm loving it in there, now.  

-It's great that I got so much done this morning, but now I'm exhausted and contracting like crazy.  I need to sit down for the rest of the day, otherwise I'm going to give birth to this baby 8 weeks early.

-We are in the middle of a wave of cool, rainy weather.  A huge difference from our 100% humidity, feels like 120 degrees everyday, no rain weather we've been having this summer.  I am definitely not complaining, as I love having the windows open and being able to walk out my door without feeling like I'm hitting a brick wall (am I the only one who feels that way when leaving the air conditioned house and entering the insanely hot, humid weather?)

-The downside of this cool weather is that our pool went from 86 degrees to 76 degrees in less than a week.  And that was with a solar cover on it 24/7.

-I wrote a 30 week pregnancy update 2 weeks ago... and I never posted it.

-We finally landed 99% on a name for the baby (Noah's name was only ever 99% too, until he was born... I just can't decide 100% until the baby comes out).  It's the same name we've been pretty sure we would use ever since I got pregnant.  I had several dreams in my first trimester where I gave birth to a baby boy and named him this.  However, I kept waiting for something else to come along, something that I would love as much as I loved the name Noah.  Nothing has come, though, and my husband is obsessed with this name, so I finally decided to just embrace it.  I'm sure I will start to love it as much as I love the name 'Noah'.  There isn't another name I like more than this name, so we're going with it.

-Sorry, we're not sharing the actual name:)

-I am renewing my obsession with cloth diapers in preparation for this little nugget's arrival.  I found the renewal to be necessary considering Noah has been potty trained for 3 months now.  This means I am spending some more money.  My stash is seriously out of control already, but I just keep searching to find the best system for us.  That means many different diapers for many different situations.

-Don't believe me that my stash is out of control?  I have:

58 pocket diapers

60 fitted diapers

24 diaper covers

10 wool covers

141 inserts and doublers (many of these are hemp or Flip inserts, so they make up their own diapers)

60 prefolds and flats

45 fleece liners

-Granted, not all of these diapers fit all throughout the baby's life, nor do I like all of them.  I have a lot of newborn diapers, and I have a lot of diapers that won't fit a newborn.  That's a big reason why my numbers are so high.  Take the pocket diapers, for instance.  Of those 58 diapers, 9 of them will only fit a newborn up to about 4 or 5 months old (I don't make small children), 3 of them will only fit a toddler, 10 of them I'm not a big fan of so I rarely used them, 10 of them I really hated and never used... really there are only 10 that I fully enjoyed and used in each rotation between washes.

-Yes, I am buying some more.  I want to finally buy some bumGenius 4.0 pockets, a bumGenius Elemental and a Freetime (those will be my first forays into AIOs), and I'm going to buy 3 more Flip covers, since I love them.  There are sales going on on both those brands right now, so I'm going to take advantage.  I'm also going to buy some more Thirsties hemp inserts because they're so flippin' absorbent.  Last thing I want is a super soaker leaking out of all his diapers.

-I should really just write a cloth diaper post, updating what is going on in that situation.  But who knows if/when I'll get around to that.

-I could probably add a lot more bullets to this post, but it's time to put Noah down for his nap.  Hopefully I have assured you all that I am perfectly fine:)

Restoring Junky Cloth Diapers

Back in April or May my friend Sarah gave me a whole bunch of Kissaluvs fitted cloth diapers.  35, to be exact.  35 fitted diapers.  That is over $500 worth of diapers.

Why would my friend give me $500 worth of diapers, you ask?

She told me they were really stained, and she was only going to give me the size 1s, because they weren't as stained.  I asked her to give me all of them, because I really wanted more newborn sized fitteds, and she was literally going to throw them away.  I figured I could work on the stains, and even if they didn't come out I could still use them once I stripped them and made sure they were really clean.

I knew she had a bad washing routine because she had stopped using cloth diapers due to stink issues and her daughter getting a rash (read: ammonia problems).  I don't think she knows a whole lot about washing cloth diapers, and from her stories about her washing machine, I knew it didn't work very well.

Still, some stripping, maybe some OxiClean, some Tide, and I thought I'd be in the clear.

Not quite.

I really didn't know what I was getting myself into.  They were total junk when I got them.  They were pretty stained, and they were also all splotchy because she tried to bleach the stains out (with actual bleach), so the previously yellow diapers were now mottled yellow and beige.  And the insides still had poop stains.  But that was the least of my problems.  The biggest problem is that they were so crunchy.  Seriously, so so so crunchy.  I would never ever have put them on a baby's bum.

I started by soaking them in Tide and OxiClean, then giving them a heavy hot wash.  I dried them.  Still crunchy.

I did the above steps again.  Still crunchy.

I did some research on softening diapers, and decided to try washing in just hot water with 1/2 cup of vinegar would be my first step (since it's the easiest).

Ummm, holy moly, there were so many suds in my washing machine.  But I hadn't added any soap.

Okay, so we were dealing with serious detergent build up.  That's okay, I'll just strip them.  (Stripping cloth diapers usually involves doing several hot washes with no detergent.  That's the simplest way to do it, anyway).

I kept adding vinegar to the washes because it's supposed to help release build up and it's supposed to soften the diapers.

After 3 washes there were still crazy suds in my washing machine.

After 6 washes there were still crazy suds in my washing machine.  As in, it looked like I was adding soap to the wash cycles.  That's how many suds there were.

After 9 washes there were still suds in my washing machine.

How could these diapers have so much build up?!?!


I then put them in my bathtub in hot water and vinegar.  I let them soak for awhile and then agitated and squeezed out each one.  I'm sure you can imagine how fun it was for a pregnant lady to be kneeling over a bathtub hand washing 35 diapers in hot hot water.

35 fitted diapers... the yellow ones are the size 1s, which she didn't have to bleach.

I then put them in the washing machine for their 10th wash.  There were very few suds in that wash, so I decided it would be my last one.  Finally.

I put them in the dryer.  My hope was that the crunchiness was from all the detergent buildup, and I would have nice soft diapers at the end of the dryer cycle.

Uhh, nope.  They were still crunchy.  Too crunchy to put on a baby's bum.  Crap.

On the bright side, after all that washing the stains were 99% gone.  Out of the 35 diapers there were only 2 diapers left that had extremely light staining.  That was something!

So now I had to seriously explore other options for softening my diapers.  I already use dryer balls, so I knew that wasn't going to help.  And regular fabric softeners are a huge cloth diapering no-no, as they cause the fabric to repel.  Not exactly what you want for something that's supposed to absorb pee.

I remembered reading a post on All About Cloth Diapers a few months beforehand about how there are cloth diaper safe fabric softeners.  I went to find the post and wrote down the 4 different CD safe fabric softeners.

The problem is that I live in Canada.  Most of those nice products?  Not available.

After doing my research I discovered that Seventh Generation products are available at a couple of stores in the city nearby.  I didn't know for sure if they sold the fabric softener, but it was worth a trip into town to find out.

They did!

I was still nervous to try fabric softener for fear that it would cause my diapers to repel.  I knew the blog post I read said they wouldn't, but I was still nervous.  I started by trying it on the size 1s, which I was less likely to use (since by the time the baby would fit size 1s, he would also fit into all the rest of my one-size diapers).

I did a rinse with fabric softener and then put them in the dryer.  Low and behold, it worked!!  They came out soooo beautifully soft.  Just as soft as my brand new Kissaluvs.  And I poured water on one... no repelling!!!

I used the fabric softener on the rest of the diapers and dried them too.  They came out soft and fluffy as well.

I almost cried with relief.

Then I put them in a laundry basket and didn't look at them for like a week.  Freaking diapers were the bane of my existence for a good 3 days.

But you know what?  Totally worth it.  $500 worth of fitted diapers, for free.  They started out in terrible shape, but now they're almost like brand new (if only she hadn't used bleach and ruined the colour on the outside of the diapers).  I'd do all that work again to be able to cover my newborn's bum with fluffy goodness.

Now I have a ton of prefolds that I don't need.  Oh well.  Maybe I'll use them as burp cloths:)

More Nesting

My knee is doing a lot better. I am surprised and thrilled. It's definitely not 100%, probably more like 80%, but I can function a lot better now. I am still semi trying to take it easy, because my knee does protest when I am moving around a lot (less so than it was a few days ago, though), but since I've been feeling better I've been getting lots of stuff done!

Last Friday we finally got the new nursery rearranged, and the change brought up. The room is set up in a more functional way, now. After rearranging, I got all the baby clothes up to size 6 month folded and put away (I'd been waiting to do this until I knew the dresser was in it's permanent home, which I couldn't know until the room got rearranged).

Also on Friday I set up the change table with most of our newborn cloth diapers. There are still some left that need to be prepped, but of course I keep forgetting to throw them in with Noah's night time diapers. Noah only pees at night like once or twice a week, so I'm only doing diaper laundry once every week and a half or two weeks. This past load I ended up washing towels with the diapers, because the load was SOOO puny. And yet I still didn't remember to put the diapers in to get prepped.

I don't really like this change table because it's a lot smaller than our other one. It will have to do for now, though. I was hating it when we first brought it in the room, because the nursery furniture is white (Noah's is natural wood), and the change table is a honey colour. It didn't match at all, and it was really bothering me at first. However, it looks a lot cuter now that it has colour coordinating change pad covers and diaper bins/baskets. It blends in with the curtains and the crib sheets. So I can deal with it.

This weekend I also washed, folded, and put away all the new blankets, crib sheets, and clothes. I am really excited to be able to use this new stuff that I didn't have with Noah! The Aden&Anais blankets are so gorgeous, and I can't wait to use the Beba Bean blankets and Miracle Blankets that I bought. Oh, and the Ergo? I can't wait to use that either! It just seems so much simpler to get on and off (and get the baby in and out of) than my other baby carriers.

I'm also really looking forward to being able to use the new sleepers I got. With Noah we only had 4 newborn sleepers. Well, he was a tall baby (21.5 inches at birth, which is the height limit of newborn clothing), but newborns are so curled up that even the tall ones really can't fit in 3 month clothing right away. Their scrunched up legs get lost in the body of the sleepers. So we struggled for the first couple of weeks, doing wash every single day just so we would have enough sleepers for him to wear, with all the peeing, pooping, and spitting up he did on them. I am not interested in doing that again this time, so I bought more. I also bought more 3 month sleepers. And the best part is that all of the new sleepers I bought are zippered! We learned our lesson the first time around - snaps are a huge pain in the butt when you're doing 15-20 diaper changes a day - especially in the middle of the night! By the time Noah was 4 months old he was in 9 month clothing, and we stuck with zippers from then on out. But up until then most of our sleepers are snaps. I'd love to replace every one of them with zippers, but that doesn't make a lot of sense, so we'll just supplement our stash and use the zippered sleepers first.

Also, on Sunday I bought 11 receiving blankets from a girl I know who is done having kids for $1 a blanket. I needed more receiving blankets for the home birth, and they should be ones I don't mind getting ruined. I was glad to get that off my list of things to do. Now I just have to find some old towels that I won't mind getting ruined.

It's funny how much you can have done in preparation for a new baby, but still feel like there's so much left to do. I mean, I already have all my pads for after the birth, that's how prepared I am. But it seems like the more prepared I am, the more I realize has to get done. Thank goodness I'm not a procrastinator! Still, after what I went through last week with being unable to do anything, I am feeling a real time crunch for getting every single little thing crossed off my list. Who knows when the next mystery injury will occur.

I am just happy that I don't have to be bedridden anymore... at least not quite yet. I have several play dates planned for this week in celebration, one of which was this morning. Noah is so happy to be socializing again!

Cloth Diaper Addict

I am a total cloth diapering addict.  I just started cloth diapering about 3 months ago, but I am a total addict.  My stash is enormous - big enough for me to only wash every 8 or 9 days if I wanted to (but I wouldn't want to, because A - that's gross, and B - I love doing diaper laundry... see?  Addict).  I probably know more about cloth diapering than many moms who have been cloth diapering their children since birth, because I am obsessed.  I have spent waaaaay too much time researching the whole topic.

Even before I was pregnant with Baby #2 I was constantly researching just exactly how I want to cloth diaper my newborn.  We have a lot of one sized diapers, but they don't really fit newborns, so I needed to buy smaller diapers.  I could just use disposables until the baby fits into the one sized diapers, but I would end up using disposables for over a month.  Seeing as one of my main reasons for cloth diapering is health, it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me to not use cloth from the beginning.

I have had so much fun figuring out what to buy.  I am going to have so much more than I need!  Actually, my very first shipment of newborn cloth diapers came the day after I found out I was pregnant.

I have a bunch of Thirsties products in Size Two that I use on Noah right now.  I love them all, because they really are thirsty, and they just fit so nicely.  So I knew I wanted to buy a bunch of Thirsties products for the new baby, but I just bought a few of these to see just how small they really were.  I have also ordered Bummis Organic Cotton Prefolds in Newborn and Infant (6 of each), and 6 Kissaluvs Cotton Fleece newborn fitteds.

Justin and I have discussed this at length... actually, I have thought about it at length, presented my findings to Justin, who then agreed with me... But anyway, "our" conclusion was that price is not really the factor here.  Function is. Originally I was cloth diapering because of the cost savings, but that is no longer the case.  If I'm going with the cost factor, fitteds and covers are pretty much the most expensive option.  But, they work really really well.  You know all those poop explosions you dealt with when you had an infant?  They rarely happen with cloth diapers, and they are pretty much unheard of when you use fitteds and covers.

I didn't really want to go with all prefolds and covers, which is the cheapest option, because Justin isn't really up for folding and snappi-ing a prefold.  And I'm not sure that I want to do that with a new baby in the house, either.  We wanted simple and fast.  I also didn't want to have to put a fleece liner in every single diaper, and I am not a big fan of fabrics that stay wet up against the baby's bum.

We also wanted super absorbent.  I remember with newborn Noah, I never knew when he was going to fall asleep.  I don't want to stress about the fact that my newborn just fell asleep, but had already been in the same diaper for an hour and a half and would for sure start leaking during his nap.  I rarely had to worry about that with disposables, but I do have some cloth diapers that wouldn't perform very well in that area.

So I'm pretty sure that fitteds, covers, and some pocket diapers stuffed with hemp or prefolds are our main choices for cloth diapering our new baby.  I think I will buy a bunch of Kawaii's Pure and Natural diapers, which are aplix (a.k.a. very Daddy and Grandma friendly) and specifically for newborns, but I will stuff them with hemp and/or prefolds, not just with the inserts they come with.  I've heard that organic cotton is extremely absorbent (perhaps even equal to hemp?), which is where the Bummis Organic Prefolds come in.  I thought they were worth a try, since they are considerably cheaper than hemp.

My plan right now is to order a bunch more Thirsties Duo Fab Fitteds (I think I'd like to have at least 10 of them), and a few Kissaluvs Organic Cotton Hemp newborn fitteds (I have one of these for Noah and they are pretty absorbent).  I will definitely order a ton more hemp boosters, hemp inserts, and hemp prefolds, and I will probably also order more Indian Cotton prefolds.  Ideally I would like to stuff every pocket diaper I own with hemp or a prefold... I'm just not a huge fan of microfiber.  Finally, as mentioned, I will buy some Kawaii Pure and Natural diapers (probably 12-24 of them, to round out my newborn stash).

Watch me spend at least $500 on this.  Actually, I have no doubt that I will.  By no means have I taken the most cost effective cloth diapering route!
